Sergey Maximishin has three homelands, he says: the village where he was born, the city where he grew up, and the city where he has lived his life - and, more broadly, the USSR and Russia. The book is in two volumes. The first is built from his collection of vernacular photography: pictures by unknown authors found in family albums, wall newspapers, nameless studios and institutional reports, running from the Revolution to Perestroika - staged, unambitious snapshots of coats, feasts, holidays, weddings and funerals that have become, almost by accident, some of the most honest testimony of the period. The second volume is Maximishin's own photography, made across a quarter of a century from Moscow to Kamchatka and arranged in five chapters - East, Centre, North, South and the Capitals - a set of observations rather than a portrait, a journey through Russia in space as the first volume is a journey through it in time.
