Essay by Miss Tiger

A rare visual archive of Sally's Hideaway and Sally's II, the Times Square drag and trans bars that were a cultural landmark for New York's trans and ballroom community in the late 1980s and 1990s. The club was created by Sally Maggio, who had earlier run the influential 220 Club, and became a venue for drag pageants and ballroom events hosted or honoured by legends such as Pepper LaBeija, Octavia St. Laurent (the cover star), Avis Pendavis and Paris Dupree. Between 1991 and 1997 Brian Lantelme photographed performers, audiences and the atmosphere of a fleeting moment, as Times Square was redeveloped and its adult businesses displaced. The club's murals, destroyed after it closed in 1997, survive only in these photographs. The book includes an essay by Miss Tiger, a visual anthropologist and curator.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
