Introduction by Jordan Tannahill

The sixth book by the photographer, filmmaker and visual artist Matt Lambert chronicles his experimental film archive from 2015 to 2025, including unreleased set photography, film stills, behind-the-scenes pictures and other ephemera. Arranged in chapters, it takes in cult films such as Flower, Pleasure Park, Butt Muscle, Subspace, Sweat, Moan Together, Release Me and Klappe, along with scripts, stories and quotes from performers. Adult actors, musician Christeene, designer Michele Lamy and Rick Owens appear among the many faces and bodies whose participation helps co-construct the work. Lambert describes re-editing the archive as a way of seeing it as a lens on his youth in Los Angeles and on the ephemera he was both obsessed with and terrified by: porn ads from the LA Express, VHS covers, punk-show flyers and homemade collages. The design draws on queer adult publications and VHS tapes of the 1980s and 1990s.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
