For seven years Cara Galowitz walked the streets of Corona, Queens every day during her lunch break from her nearby museum job. These photographs, which she calls an exercise in seeing, capture the vivid juxtapositions of one of the most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in the world. With layers of irony, humour and visual sophistication they evoke a place in continual progress, where the past, in faded lettering or crumbling architecture, collides with the present in spontaneous street decorations, signage, graffiti and religious iconography. The images evoke the struggle and resilience of the people of Corona and the quirky beauty of its streets.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
