In 1986 Anders Goldfarb moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn, joining a growing number of young artists seeking the low rents of what was then a declining neighbourhood of light industrial buildings and working-class homes. With black-and-white film and a medium-format Rolleiflex he began photographing Williamsburg and Greenpoint in 1987, riding his bike around the area in search of the peculiar beauty of sidings, peeling paint and razor wire. His photographs are a valuable historical record of these neighbourhoods before demolition and gentrification, and their subjects are metaphors for loss and vulnerability.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
