The imposing presence of architecture captured in the absence of humans: that is the defining characteristic of Candida Höfer's photographs. In 1992 she photographed the Kunsthistorisches Institut of the University of Bonn in ten analogue black-and-white pictures that had never been publicly shown. In 2020 she returned to the institute to take more pictures with a digital camera. The two series are gathered in this book, a captivating historical and aesthetic comparison that probes how university life has changed over almost three decades.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
