In 2012, after a thunderstorm, Arina Dähnick perceived the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin as a fascinating and paradoxical spatial experience of boundless vastness and a simultaneous feeling of being held. From then on she photographed Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's building under varying conditions until its closure in 2015, and afterwards followed in his footsteps from Berlin to Brno and from Chicago to New York. She captured his most famous buildings, among them the Villa Tugendhat, the Seagram Building and the Lake Shore Drive Apartments, in photo series. The book received the silver medal of the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
