In 2015 the photographer Jakob Ganslmeier went on an extended tour of Poland in search of pictures that capture the country's social realities and way of life at a time of wrenching change. The title evokes Lonely Planet, and he took inspiration from the format of the popular travel guides, with recommendations grouped by categories. Crisscrossing Poland, covering more than ten thousand kilometres, he met widely different people and draws our attention to places that would never make it into a guidebook: a country of extremes, between boomtown optimism and decline, consumerism and poverty, gleaming façades and bleak village streets.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
