The second volume of La Fábrica's Obras Maestras collection tells the story of Francesc Català-Roca through the reproduction of more than 250 photographs, in many cases unpublished or little known, selected from the author's archive especially for this book. He is one of the most important names in contemporary Spanish photography. Born in 1922, the son and father of photographers, his work of the forties, fifties and sixties represented the irruption of the new street photography in Spain, then an isolated country. His body of work is a magnificent portrait of the twentieth century that can be related to what Robert Doisneau or Henri Cartier-Bresson were doing on the other side of the Pyrenees. A tireless traveller, he toured Spain for half a century and portrayed the dizzying changes taking place in the countryside and the cities. A vital part of Barcelona's bohemia, his camera captured crucial moments of creation and the human side of artists such as Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. He won Spain's National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1983, the first photographer to receive it.
