Where do our minds go when we read books, magazines and letters? Edited by Melissa Catanese, Voyagers consists almost entirely of anonymous black-and-white snapshots of people in postures of reading — in living rooms, on beds, at the beach, eating breakfast. The hypnotic typological rhythm is occasionally broken by a new photographic element, a pyramid, a starry night, sunlight through a window, glimpses of the readers' possible narrative journeys. A wordless book with the size and feel of a vintage paperback from a flea market, its images were selected from Peter J. Cohen's collection of more than 20,000 vernacular photographs from the early to mid twentieth century.
