After the attacks of 9/11, nearly 100 trained search dogs and their handlers were deployed by FEMA to help in the rescue efforts at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A decade later Charlotte Dumas tracked down 15 of the surviving dogs and photographed them at their homes across the United States, where they still lived with their handlers. Composed at close range in natural light, her portraits give an intimate view of the everyday lives of these highly specialised working animals.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
