In a world where freedom of choice is the highest good, the city-planning equivalent is the intersection, and the detour is precisely where the magic happens: a clandestine opportunity to escape the paths laid out for us. Otto Snoek photographs main arteries and side streets uncovered on random road trips through Rotterdam, kindred to the détournement of the avant-garde a century ago. The infrastructural sites are designed for car drivers, yet none of them appears: these are empty photographs, a city set after a show has ended, with a sense of alienation and no promise of blissful emptiness.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
