Design by Willem van Zoetendaal

Ilse Oosterkamp's son Melle has multiple disabilities, including hypermobility, a condition that makes his joints extremely flexible, so that he can effortlessly create short-lived sculptures with his fingers. The poses last a few seconds at most and cannot be controlled; they are not staged but arise in his own way, without his being aware of it. As a photographer she is fascinated by being different, by the impossibilities and unsuspected possibilities of the body: beautiful shapes, but not always a pretty picture, in a visual culture where everyone seems eager to showcase perfection.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
