Marjaana Kella's book investigates the nature of photographic portraiture: how, or if, the photograph's description of surface physiognomy tells us anything about interior character and psychology. We form judgements about people from their visual appearance, but when we meet them we also have the way they move and speak; the photograph is dumb and still, and that stillness lets us scrutinise a suspended moment with great intensity, while the concentration on surface leaves room for our interpretive imagination to work.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
