Lee To Sang (Hong Kong 1938 – Amsterdam 2024) moved to Paramaribo in 1964, where he opened his first photo studio, and in 1979 to Amsterdam, where he opened To Sang Fotostudio on the Albert Cuypstraat. His clients were the Dutch locals and the many immigrants of the neighbourhood: Surinamese, Pakistani, Chinese, Moroccan, Turkish and Kurdish. Willem van Zoetendaal, who discovered the studio in the early nineties, asked many students of the Rietveld Academy to have their first studio experience as models. Lee To Sang became known through a book published by Basalt in 1995 and through Johan van der Keuken's documentary film about the studio, and retired in 2003.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
