A publication in two volumes: one for the photographs that Gruyaert took in Los Angeles and Las Vegas in 1981, the other for those he took in Moscow in 1989. In an era in which the world was politically divided between East and West, the search for light and sensuality of Gruyaert, photographer of the Magnum agency, led him to try to capture the colors of two places that represented this division: on the one hand we have the glitz of Las Vegas and Los Angeles in 1981, on the other the austere sobriety of Moscow in 1989, shortly before the dissolution of the Soviet Union. An exceptional testimony to an extraordinary era. Accompanied by an essay by the writer and curator David Campany, this two-volume publication contains around one hundred images, of which almost seventy have never been published before. Harry Gruyaert: East/West offers the opportunity to delve deeper into the work of a fundamental author through work done in two profoundly different places, in a historically important moment. “Very few photographers have demonstrated Harry Gruyaert's ability to produce stunning color images in any light and any color, anywhere in the world.” —David Campany

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
