This volume presents a body of pictures found at a New York flea market in 2004. In each of these archive images from the 1950s and 1960s one or more men cross-dress and take on the appearance of women. They met every year from 1959 to 1968 at the house of the owner of the pictures, Susanna, where they lived freely as women and photographed one another as such; some of them were making their gender transition in the same period. The book takes the name of that place, Casa Susanna, and brings together the whole set of pictures along with reproductions of Transvestia, the clandestine magazine they published and circulated at the time, and a text by Susan Stryker. Its publication echoes the exhibition of the same name held in Arles during the 2023 Rencontres de la Photographie.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
