A special edition issue curated, designed and published by AVARIE, Paris, and Labor Neunzehn, Berlin. It accompanies the KAMERA programme while remaining an independent object to collect. The central idea that directs the montage of these small volumes is the interplay between addition and subtraction: a missing image from the projection, or an unreleased second taken from an artist's work, expanded over twenty-four pages, with a piece removed directly from the show enclosed in every copy. The editing sets up a dialogue between frames and performed writings drawn from texts, scripts, storyboards and notes, so that the exhibition is extended into a physical space.

KAMERA is a programme of experimental moving images and printed matter held in a former GDR building in Berlin. Each event shows a retrospective of one artist over four days, alongside a small display of their publications or works on paper, and sets out to foster a critical dialogue between different formats.

Maria Iorio and Raphaël Cuomo investigate the conditions under which dominant historical narratives are produced and can be challenged. Their hybrid cinematic forms bring out unheard voices, disregarded collective experiences and resistant subjectivities; new knowledge comes to light, shared by way of a performative practice, translation processes and the aesthetic and political dimensions of listening.

For this issue they presented Undead Voices, an ongoing installation whose starting point is a Super 8 amateur reel, Donne emergete!, made in 1975 by Isabella Bruno and recently rediscovered, damaged beyond repair by archival criteria. Reviewing its devastated chemical emulsions, the work exposes the effects of the marginalisation of minor cinemas.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
