Texts arranged chronologically

Thirty years of the artist's own writing, gathered in every form it took. Arranged chronologically, the texts set out what Tillmans thinks about photography, music, politics, nightlife, astronomy, spirituality and activism. The sources are as varied as the subjects: statements and conversations first published in exhibition catalogues, posts on social media, song lyrics. Whether he is discussing his own practice or putting other people's thinking into words, he is an unusually inventive narrator, and the book is the best single route into a very large body of work.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
