I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now is a performance by João Fiadeiro, premiered in October 1997 at the Festival International de Nouvelle Danse in Montreal. It is based on the sound piece I am sitting in a room created in 1969 by Alvin Lucier. On stage Fiadeiro uses a copying machine to reproduce his own face: by changing the scale and copying the successive copies, the original picture progressively loses its definition. Lucier's sound piece serves as the conceptual platform and the sound landscape that make explicit the position Fiadeiro wants to explore — the relation between repetition and difference, and the way in which, without subterfuge or effects, the piece does exactly what it says.
