Macau was the last remaining European colony in China when the Portuguese transferred its sovereignty back in December 1999. The government there is now headed by a chief executive appointed by China's central government. In June 2009 Fernando Chui Sai On declared himself the sole candidate for the post, and António Júlio Duarte followed the last two weeks of the campaign, documenting a candidate who has no competitors, who does not need to convince, who is not elected by the people. The work is a piece of reportage in which the pictures lose their topical value and become generic: they are about a campaign and a candidate, and they stage the process of legitimising power.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
