Marco D’Anna continues his exploration of global maritime trade routes. Following his previous project One Belt One Road (Artphilein Editions, 2019), the photographer shifts his focus—from the landscapes of stacked containers to vast cargo ships that appear as tiny silhouettes on the distant horizon of the main shipping lanes. This photographic journey becomes a visual reflection on globalization, using cargo vessels as symbols of the complex and often invisible dynamics of global commerce. In today’s economy, the production of goods—through stages of harvesting, extraction, processing, manufacturing, finishing, and distribution—frequently spans multiple continents. Before reaching the final consumer, a product may cross oceans several times. These interdependent manufacturing chains rely heavily on stable geopolitical conditions and international trade policies, making the shipping industry a critical lens through which to view our interconnected world - exposed at the rising risk of a global tax war.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
