Soil Affinities, although a project in itself, started with Uriel Orlow's desire to share with the public the research that accompanied and structured his eponymous project, developed at Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers between April 2017 and December 2018. The volume is built around a gathering of black and white images and a notebook that brings the body of texts together. The two sets induce a dialogue and a free circulation between the narratives proposed by the authors, functioning in resonance with a story at once local — Aubervilliers and certain agricultural zones of Mali and Senegal — and global: the history of those localities in the light of colonial and post-colonial history and of the geopolitical and economic movements across the world that they implied.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
