IT'S ALIVE! gathers over ten years of collaboration and archives revolving around the artistic universe of the choreographer Gisèle Vienne. A subjective monograph on her work, it is one of Estelle Hanania's densest clusters of images to date, arraying a set of frames that spans from 2008 to 2019. For Hanania the human body has proven to be a limitless source of inspiration, and her ability to capture the essence of Vienne's vision — through an acute visual understanding of bodies and objects, and a knack for building natural bridges between the performances and the whole of her own practice — makes this a milestone in her career. Shaking up the foundations of the classic live-performance publication, it invites the reader to look from beyond the borders of the stage, taking a step back and shifting perspectives, and deploys its heart in a truly free and sensible fashion while eschewing the chronological or thematic approach usually associated with such efforts.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
