Dondoro is a work born from the collaboration between Estelle Hanania and the famous Japanese puppet master Hoichi Okamoto. An enigmatic creator who lived alone in the Japanese countryside near Nagano, Okamoto made hundreds of puppets for his own performances and had archived every one of them since the late 1970s. When he slipped behind one of his human-sized figures to animate it, a confused game began between the master, the puppet and the person holding the camera. As so often in Hanania's work, the sequence leads the viewer into a world where human figures constantly appear and disappear — the magical world of a magical storyteller.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
