Benjamin Fredrickson documents the wedgie subculture in his debut book, a series made over four years in which male subjects are positioned and given extreme or atomic wedgies, with underwear pulled up above their heads. An avid participant in the scene, Fredrickson works as an insider, receiving many requests from future participants through social media and supported by the wedgie community, and the agency of the sitters is crucial as the images are born from collaboration. Shot from the dominant partner's perspective, sometimes with the photographer's shoes or trousers visible, the pictures invite the viewer to become a third participant; the subjects face away and stay anonymous, and the focus is concentrated on the stretched underwear and the form of the bodies. The ass is the vehicle for the wedgie and a focal point, which Fredrickson approaches with a distinctly queer subjectivity.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
