Edited and published by Matthew Holroyd, the founder of Baron and Baroness magazines, and the photographer Edith Bergfors, the Death Book is a series of loosely connected vignettes exploring photography's relationship to death and how death is portrayed in Western society. In the surveillance culture of the internet the dead and the alive exist side by side: on Google Earth, Bergfors found photographs of her now-deceased grandparents gardening, and through extensive Photoshop manipulation the editors present themselves thinned down, airbrushed and clad in designer fashion, hoping to be remembered as rich and picture-perfect. The National Portrait Gallery in London declined their offer to bequeath the portraits to the nation. A rent boy is portrayed as the devil alongside muscular clubbers, and the book includes contributions from image makers and artists including Lars von Trier, Roy Andersson, Damien Hirst, Merle Allin, Manabu Yamanaka, Miron Zownir, Dallas Seitz and Bill's Playhouse.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
