Baron issue 5
For the fifth edition of Baron, Harley Weir presents a visual essay on the female body through biological conditions such as reproduction and birth, and how these are mediated in a patriarchal, capitalist society. The title asks what our bodies do: each part holds several, often conflicting, functions, as the nipple is at once an erogenous zone and a feeding station that provokes both desire and disgust. The book combines new work with never-before-published fashion and documentary photographs made with childhood friends, colleagues and models as collaborators. It includes a diptych of the stylist Camille Bidault-Waddington with her son, a series of self-portraits of a childhood friend experimenting with womanhood through crossdressing, overpainted still-lifes made with the set designer Emma Roach, and a closing series documenting the labour of birth. Weir's limited-edition campaign for Helmut Lang opens and closes the issue.
