In 1965 a yé-yé music contest brought together more than seventy bands from all over Portugal and from the colonies — Angola, Mozambique, Guinea, Cape Verde — breaking every attendance record. In the middle of the dictatorship and of the colonial war, it made visible the appearance of a new mass phenomenon and of a new age group: youth. In music, in cinema and in fashion that youth found markers of identity that came into conflict with the prevailing social and political model. In an inconceivably sad and oppressed country, the contest pointed to the possibility of escaping the regimented claustrophobia in which a whole generation was living.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
