The genesis of the project dates from 2011, when Patrícia Almeida began collecting pictures and headlines from European and North American newspapers. She aimed at composing a visual archive that would reflect a media landscape marked by a series of large-scale demonstrations that shook the world, particularly in the wake of the Arab Spring and of the heightened economic and political crisis affecting some European countries. The archive gradually became a dynamic object that inspired several works analysing and questioning the way contemporary media communicate information in pictures and words.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
